Nature Calling

The piece Nature Calling consists of a photograph of a constructed situation inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. On top of the image there is a text that appears to have been painted with a brush, but is actually generated by artificial intelligence, in particular, an AI that is still very young and therefore unable to spell the words "Nature Calling" correctly. This childish and naive writing can resemble something natural and creative. The frame, which appears to be an antique frame made of natural materials, is actually partly made of plastic waste generated by my private consumption.


In working work of art, my aim has been to work with something that I fear and am concerned about, but which I am also curious about. I am afraid of what climate change is doing to our planet and whether AI will be a threat to humanity. At the same time, I am curious about artificial intelligence. I harbor a hope that AI can be part of the solution and, for example, contribute with technology that will help us reach our climate goals.

I have asked myself these questions: where does nature begin and end? Is it possible in 2022 to make a distinction between the natural, the human and the synthetic? Plastic is extremely useful and something we humans are completely dependent on, but at the same time it covers sandy beaches all over the world and destroys wildlife and human welfare. What do microplastics actually do to our bodies and hormones?

And finally: in the future will there be a difference between art created by a thinking machine and a human, or will one of the two be seen as the more natural?
